Preparation

Unlike most hairstyles, you are not going to put your Clairhair clip in hair extension all over. If you have tape in hair extensions that is a different story because of how they lie at your roots but if you are going for clip ins focus them around the lower half of your head. You are going to need to apply the heat protecting serum all over your locks because heated tools are your next step.

Turn up the heat

This look is great because of the different textures and for that, we need to use two types of heated tool. Separate your hair, using a fishtail comb, so there is a precise line from the top of one ear to the other. Tie the hair in the top half out of the way for now so you can focus on the bottom half and grab your crimpers. You need to make sure your hair is crimped evenly so I would suggest doing this in rows. Once you have done that it is time to focus on your top half. You want to use the thinnest curling iron you have to create super tight curls. If you have chopstick curlers, great, if not you will have to use the smallest part of your regular curling iron. This might take a bit longer but it is totally worth it.

Create the style

Let’s stick with the top half for now. Gather it back into a tight ponytail. If you are hair isn’t as thick as you want it to be and you are using clip in hair extensions, add them around your hair tie now.

Because of how perfectly the chignon is at the top of Regina King’s head it is safe to assume she used a hair doughnut and lots of bobby pins. Put your hair through the doughnut and start wrapping your curly hair around the doughnut, making sure you don’t pull your curls straight, then pin them in place.

Once that is secured we can focus on the bottom half. You want to gather this into a ponytail but not at the nape of your neck. Secure with a hair tie at the bottom of your neck, making sure it will stay in place but won’t pull on the hairs above. To make it look great to grab a one-inch section and wrap it around and above the hair tie, pin it in the back. Then grab another section and wrap it over and below the hair tie. Then you are done!
